September 23, 1923 — Outbreak of the September Uprising

The official date of the September Uprising, a major armed rebellion organized by the Bulgarian Communist Party and backed by agrarian groups. Insurgents captured several towns and villages, mainly in northwestern Bulgaria. Although it was eventually crushed by government forces, the uprising resulted in thousands of deaths and left a deep scar in 20th-century Bulgarian society.

September 23, 1947 — Execution of Nikola Petkov

Nikola Petkov, the leader of the Bulgarian Agrarian National Union (BANU) and the head of the democratic opposition, was executed by the communist authorities following a show trial. His death marked the final destruction of legal political opposition in Bulgaria, leading to the establishment of a single-party communist dictatorship.
