Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.
October 6, 1877 — Engineering the Final Phase at Pleven
Russian engineering commander Eduard Totleben — the hero of the Sevastopol siege in the Crimean War — arrived to take charge of siege operations at Pleven. His presence transformed the character of the campaign: Totleben implemented a systematic and airtight encirclement, cutting every remaining Ottoman supply line and making the eventual fall of the city a matter of time rather than a question of further frontal assault.
October 6, 1991 — First Bulgarian Satellite Link
Bulgaria established its first direct satellite communications link as part of the country’s rapid integration into post-Cold War international infrastructure. The development reflected the broader transformation of Bulgarian society in the early 1990s, as the country dismantled Soviet-era information controls and connected to global communications networks.
