Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.

October 7, 1877 — Totleben’s New Order

General Eduard Totleben began reorganising the Russian and Bulgarian siege lines around Pleven, plugging gaps in the encirclement and improving the defensive works. His engineering expertise, honed during the legendary siege of Sevastopol, brought a new level of methodical precision to the Pleven operations. Under his direction, the noose around Osman Pasha’s garrison was drawn steadily tighter.

October 7, 1944 — Battle of Nisava Valley

Bulgarian forces advancing through Yugoslavia engaged German and Croatian Ustasha units in the Nisava Valley, fighting their way northward as part of the broader Allied push to clear German forces from the Balkans. The campaign was costly but moved quickly, demonstrating the effectiveness of the Bulgarian army under its new Allied command and contributing to the liberation of Belgrade weeks later.
