October 15, 1912 — The Bulgarian Army Nears Adrianople

Bulgarian forces reached the outer defensive lines of Adrianople (Edirne) — the heavily fortified Ottoman city that had been the capital of the empire before the fall of Constantinople. The siege of Adrianople would be one of the defining operations of the First Balkan War, testing Bulgarian siege capabilities against some of the most modern fortifications in south-eastern Europe.

October 15, 1946 — Georgi Dimitrov Returns to Bulgaria

Georgi Dimitrov — the celebrated Bulgarian communist leader who had defied the Nazis at the Leipzig fire trial of 1933 and served as head of the Communist International — returned to Bulgaria from the Soviet Union to lead the new communist government. His return marked the consolidation of communist power and the beginning of a rapid transformation of Bulgaria along Soviet lines that would reshape the country’s economy, society, and culture.
