Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.
October 23, 1877 — Dispatches from the Front
European newspapers published detailed accounts of the Pleven siege based on reports from foreign correspondents and military attaches embedded with Russian and Bulgarian forces. The international press coverage of the Bulgarian liberation campaign — more extensive than any previous Balkan conflict — brought the cause of Bulgarian statehood to a vast international audience and created political pressure on governments across Europe to consider the Bulgarian question in the post-war settlement.
October 23, 1993 — Bulgaria Applies to Join the European Union
Bulgaria formally submitted its application for membership of the European Union, setting the country on the long road toward accession that would culminate in 2007. The application reflected both the aspirations of Bulgaria’s post-communist society and the strategic judgment of its leadership that European integration represented the most secure path to prosperity and democratic stability.
