Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.
October 24, 1877 — Battle of Gorni Dubnik
Russian and Romanian forces stormed the Ottoman redoubt at Gorni Dubnik, west of Pleven, in a costly but decisive assault. The fall of Gorni Dubnik closed the last remaining supply road into Pleven, completing Osman Pasha’s encirclement. The battle was witnessed by a number of foreign journalists and military observers, including the British correspondent Archibald Forbes, whose vivid despatches made the Bulgarian front the most reported military campaign in the world at that moment.
October 24, 1945 — Bulgaria Joins the United Nations
Bulgaria became a founding member of the United Nations when the UN Charter entered into force. Membership in the new international organisation represented Bulgaria’s formal reintegration into the post-war international community, though in practice the country’s foreign policy would be determined by Moscow rather than by the principles of the UN Charter for the next four decades.
