January 9, 1881 — Bulgaria’s Oldest Technical School of Higher Learning Is Founded
The school laid the foundation for what later became the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy in Varna. It is regarded as Bulgaria’s oldest technical school of higher learning. Its first purpose is the clearest concrete detail: training people to operate ship engines and work as stokers.
The school reflected the practical needs of the young post-Liberation state. The Danube was one of Bulgaria’s great commercial and strategic arteries, and Ruse was among the country’s most dynamic cities. Trained engineers and river specialists were urgently needed.
Over time, the school moved to Varna and developed into a higher naval and maritime institution. Its early work began in Ruse before the institution later took shape in Varna.
January 9, 1990 — The New Social Democratic Party Is Established
The New Social Democratic Party was established during the first weeks of Bulgaria’s democratic transition. The timing followed the fall of Todor Zhivkov in November 1989, after which political life began reorganizing rapidly.
Old parties were revived, new organizations were formed, and public debate moved beyond the structures of the one-party state. Social democracy had a pre-communist history in Bulgaria, while the post-1989 environment required new political language and new alliances. The party’s establishment placed it inside this early period of political reorganization.
Even smaller formations helped open the public sphere and define ideological alternatives. The New Social Democratic Party was established while Bulgarian political life was beginning to operate through programmes, elections, coalitions and democratic competition.
