February 26, 1997 — NATO Includes Bulgaria’s Bid among Applicant Countries
On February 26, 1997, NATO included Bulgaria’s membership bid among those of applicant countries, a significant step in the country’s long movement toward Euro-Atlantic integration. Bulgaria was emerging from a severe political and economic crisis, and foreign policy was becoming part of a broader debate about security, democratic reform, and the country’s place after the Cold War.
The 1997 development did not make Bulgaria a NATO member overnight, but it placed the country more clearly on the alliance’s enlargement track. In the following years, Bulgaria worked through reforms and diplomatic commitments before formally joining NATO in 2004 — the date capturing a turning point in direction, not yet an arrival.
