National Assembly building in Sofia

March 5 touches two formative institutions in Bulgaria’s history — the parliamentary habits of a newly liberated state and the press organ of a movement that would later reshape the country entirely.

March 5, 1879 — First Secret Ballot in the Bulgarian Parliament

On March 5, 1879, the first vote by secret ballot was held in the Bulgarian Parliament. The event took place during the early formative period of Bulgaria’s restored political life, when representatives were building institutions from the ground up. Secret voting mattered because it offered protection for individual choice against direct pressure or intimidation in a political culture still finding its footing.

In a young system, procedure was as consequential as ideology: rules for voting, debate, and accountability shaped what public decision-making would become. This early use of the secret ballot shows that the new Bulgarian state was not only choosing leaders — it was also learning the working habits of parliamentary democracy.

March 5, 1927 — Rabotnichesko Delo Is Launched

On March 5, 1927, Rabotnichesko Delo was founded as the newspaper of the legal Bulgarian Workers’ Party. The publication later became one of the most influential papers in the country — especially after the communist takeover in 1944, when it served as the primary press organ of the ruling party. Its trajectory mirrors the wider story of how a marginal political current became the dominant force in Bulgarian public life.

In the interwar years, left-wing movements operated under legal restrictions and surveillance; after 1944, the same current controlled the state. The paper was renamed Duma in 1990 during the transition to political pluralism. March 5 marks the beginning of a media institution whose history is inseparable from Bulgaria’s political transformations across the twentieth century.
