May 9, 1910 — The Bulgarian Telegraph Agency Begins Its International Press Review
On May 9, 1910, the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency began publishing its “International Press Review.” In 1914, the publication was renamed “Press Review.”
Its appearance reflected a growing need for systematic information about events around the world. Bulgaria was a young state whose diplomacy and economy were becoming increasingly connected with Europe. The review helped officials, journalists and readers follow how the foreign press presented international events and how those events could be understood in a Bulgarian context.
May 9, 1948 — Varna’s New Airport Opens
On May 9, 1948, Varna’s new airport opened at its present location, nine kilometres west of the centre of the coastal city. The first flight arrived from Sofia on a converted Junkers 52 carrying official guests for the opening.
Varna was already one of Bulgaria’s most important Black Sea cities. Improved air connections supported tourism, trade and regional development, while the airport made the city a more accessible gateway to Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast.
The date therefore shows how information and transport gradually changed Bulgaria’s connections with the wider world.
