Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.
August 6, 1877 — Shipka Holds
After days of intense fighting, the Ottoman assault on the Shipka Pass began to falter. Bulgarian volunteers and Russian troops, despite staggering losses, maintained their positions. The failure of Suleiman Pasha’s army to break through dealt a significant blow to Ottoman plans to retake northern Bulgaria and demonstrated that the liberation campaign had reached a decisive turning point.
August 6, 1908 — Bulgaria Eyes Independence
With the Young Turk Revolution transforming the Ottoman Empire’s political landscape, Bulgarian political leaders in Sofia began openly discussing the formal declaration of full independence from Ottoman suzerainty. The weakening of central Ottoman authority created the window Bulgaria’s rulers had been waiting for — an opportunity seized two months later, on September 22, 1908, when independence was proclaimed at Tarnovo.
