Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.

August 7, 1877 — Radetsky’s Counterattack

General Fyodor Radetsky led Bulgarian volunteers and Russian troops in a successful counterattack on Ottoman positions south of the Shipka Pass. The operation pushed Suleiman Pasha’s forces back down the southern slopes and secured the Bulgarian and Russian hold on the pass. The victory at Shipka would later be commemorated with one of Bulgaria’s most visited monuments, erected on the summit in the early 20th century.

August 7, 1915 — Bulgaria’s First Feature Film

The first Bulgarian feature film — The Bulgarians Are Gallant (Balgaran e galant) — was screened publicly, marking the birth of Bulgarian cinema. Directed by Vasil Gendov, who also starred in the film, it launched a national film tradition that would grow into one of the most respected in the Balkans by the mid-20th century.
