April 5, 1886 — The Tophane Agreement Recognizes the Unification
On April 5, 1886, the Great Powers and the Ottoman Empire reached an agreement recognizing the Unification of Eastern Rumelia with the Principality of Bulgaria, proclaimed on September 6, 1885.
After the political and military defense of the Unification, including victory in the Serbo-Bulgarian War, its diplomatic settlement was decisive. The agreement preserved the formal framework of Ottoman suzerainty, but in practice confirmed the union under the rule of Prince Alexander I.
The act shows how long the path can be from a political action carried out on the ground to international recognition. The Unification was already a fact, but the Tophane Agreement placed it within a diplomatic framework accepted by the Great Powers and the Ottoman Empire.
April 5, 1936 — The First State Lottery Drawing Is Held
On April 5, 1936, Sofia hosted the first drawing of the State Lottery. The lottery ticket combined the hope of a major prize, mass participation and regulated state activity.
This story may seem lighter than diplomatic crises, but it shows how modern urban life created new shared rituals. The drawing reached a broad public through the press and public events, while the state organized and regulated the practice as part of social life.
