Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.
August 9, 1877 — Shipka Pass Secured
With the arrival of Russian reinforcements, the Shipka Pass was decisively secured and the Ottoman assault definitively repelled. The Bulgarian and Russian defenders had held out against an army several times their size over multiple days of intense combat. The pass would remain in Bulgarian and Russian hands for the rest of the war, serving as the gateway through which liberating forces eventually marched south.
August 9, 1944 — The Fatherland Front’s Programme
The Bulgarian Fatherland Front — a coalition of communists, agrarians, social democrats, and the Zveno political circle — presented a detailed political programme calling for Bulgarian withdrawal from the war, expulsion of German forces, and the formation of a new government. The document laid the groundwork for the coalition’s seizure of power on September 9, 1944.
