These units rarely appear in headlines or commemorations, but their function is foundational: they give commanders the situational awareness without which modern defence cannot operate.
Radio-engineering work depends on technical training, precision equipment, and continuous discipline rather than the visible drama of combat. March 18, 1990 — Podkrepa Becomes the Podkrepa Confederation of Labour
On March 18, 1990, the Podkrepa Independent Trade Union was reorganized and renamed the Podkrepa Confederation of Labour. Founded in 1989 during the final phase of communist rule, Podkrepa had become a symbol of civil society emerging outside state control. Independent unions mattered politically because they challenged the old model in which labour organizations were integrated into the ruling system rather than representing workers’ interests against it.
The new structure and name reflected broader ambitions at a moment when Bulgarian workers faced simultaneously the collapse of old certainties and the uncertainties of market transition.
