November 12, 1897 — A Naval Force Is Established in Varna
On November 12, 1897, a naval force was established in Varna by decree of Prince Ferdinand, laying the foundations of what would become the Varna Naval Base. Bulgaria had emerged from Ottoman rule as a young state with limited maritime capacity, but access to the Black Sea made naval organization strategically important. Varna, already a major port, became the natural centre for this development. The new force helped professionalize maritime defence, training, logistics, and coastal security. November 12, 1945 — The Higher School of Technology Is Set Up in Ruse
On the same date in 1945, the Higher School of Technology was set up in Ruse. The decision came in the difficult first months after the Second World War, when Bulgaria needed engineers, technical specialists, and industrial knowledge for reconstruction and modernization. Ruse, a Danube city with strong commercial and transport traditions, was well placed for such an institution. Technical education there helped prepare specialists for machinery, production, infrastructure, and applied sciences, fields that would become increasingly important during the socialist industrialization drive. The school’s creation also showed how higher education was expanding beyond Sofia, giving regional centres a stronger role in training professionals and supporting economic development across the country.
