Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.
October 1, 1877 — Pleven: A City Under Siege
As the siege of Pleven entered its fourth month, Osman Pasha’s Ottoman garrison found itself increasingly isolated and short of supplies. Russian and Bulgarian forces had constructed an elaborate network of trenches and fortifications around the city, cutting all roads. The endurance of the defenders was remarkable — but time was running out for the trapped Ottoman army.
October 1, 1990 — Law on Political Parties
Bulgaria’s National Assembly adopted the Law on Political Parties, one of the foundational acts of the country’s post-communist democratic transition. The law established the legal framework for multi-party politics, replacing the constitutionally guaranteed monopoly of the Bulgarian Communist Party that had governed the country since 1946.
