Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.

October 10, 1912 — Bulgaria Enters the First Balkan War

Bulgarian forces crossed the Ottoman frontier and began combat operations, opening the Bulgarian front of the First Balkan War. The main Bulgarian thrust was directed at Thrace, targeting the Ottoman army at Adrianople (Edirne) and pushing toward Constantinople. The campaign opened with a series of rapid Bulgarian advances that stunned European military observers who had underestimated the Balkan League’s combat readiness and planning.

October 10, 1915 — Bulgaria Attacks Serbia

Bulgaria launched its military offensive against Serbia from the east, as German and Austro-Hungarian forces attacked from the north. By joining the Central Powers, Bulgaria sought to recover Macedonia — the territory it had lost in the Second Balkan War two years earlier. The coordinated assault overwhelmed Serbian defences and led to the collapse of the Serbian front within weeks, forcing the Serbian army into a legendary winter retreat across Albania.
