Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.
October 3, 1877 — A Garrison Running Dry
Inside besieged Pleven, Osman Pasha’s Ottoman garrison faced critical shortages of food and ammunition. Despite their desperate circumstances, the defenders maintained their discipline and held the city’s formidable earthwork fortifications. The battle of attrition around Pleven had become one of the most closely watched military operations in Europe, attracting foreign correspondents and military observers from across the continent.
October 3, 1912 — On the Eve of the First Balkan War
Bulgaria finalised its war plans alongside Serbia, Greece, and Montenegro as the Balkan League prepared to declare war on the Ottoman Empire. After years of diplomatic groundwork and secret military conventions, the alliance was days away from launching the First Balkan War — a campaign that would transform the map of south-eastern Europe and drive the Ottomans from nearly all of their remaining European territory.
