October 31, 1930 — Boris III and Giovanna Hold an Orthodox Ceremony in Sofia
King Boris III and Princess Giovanna of Savoy, now Queen Joanna of Bulgaria, held an Eastern Orthodox wedding ceremony at Sofia’s St Alexander Nevsky Memorial Cathedral. Their Catholic ceremony had taken place days earlier in Assisi, but the Sofia ceremony gave the marriage a public Bulgarian and Orthodox form. The couple arrived in the capital to official welcomes, military honours, crowds, flowers, and celebrations. The religious dimension mattered because the Bulgarian monarchy was closely tied to Orthodox identity, while Giovanna came from the Catholic House of Savoy. The ceremony therefore balanced dynastic diplomacy with domestic expectations. It became one of the most memorable royal events of interwar Bulgaria and helped introduce Queen Joanna to the public as part of the Bulgarian royal household.
October 31, 1996 — The Black Sea Strategic Action Plan Is Signed
The governments of Bulgaria, Turkiye, Georgia, Romania, Russia, and Ukraine signed the Strategic Action Plan for the Environmental Protection and Rehabilitation of the Black Sea. The date is now marked as International Black Sea Day. For Bulgaria, the Black Sea is not only a coastline and tourist region, but a vital ecological, economic, cultural, and security space. The plan recognized shared problems that no single coastal state could solve alone: pollution, overfishing, habitat loss, maritime pressure, and the need for scientific monitoring. Its signing created a regional framework for cooperation around a sea whose health affects ports, fisheries, wetlands, coastal towns, and biodiversity. The day remains a reminder that Bulgarian history also includes environmental diplomacy and responsibility for a shared maritime home.
