Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.

September 12, 1923 — Mass Arrests of Communist Activists

Following the declaration of martial law, the Bulgarian police executed a wave of preemptive arrests, detaining hundreds of prominent members of the Bulgarian Communist Party (BCP). Among those arrested were members of the party’s central committee. These arrests severely disrupted the BCP’s coordination, prompting some local committees to start the uprising prematurely.

September 12, 1969 — Opening of the Shipka National Museum

The Shipka Pass historical complex was officially designated as a national park-museum. This site, commemorating the epic defense of the pass during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, became a central monument of national memory, honoring the combined sacrifice of Russian troops and Bulgarian volunteers (Opulchenie).
