September 26, 1371 — Battle of Chernomen
An Ottoman force defeated a large Christian army led by the Serbian rulers Jovan Uglješa and Vukašin Mrnjavčević at the Battle of Chernomen (on the Maritsa River). This battle was a decisive turning point, opening the path for Ottoman expansion into the heart of the Balkans and reducing the Bulgarian lands to vulnerable vassal states.
September 26, 1908 — Prince Ferdinand Visits Pliska Ruins
En route to Veliko Tarnovo for the proclamation of independence, Prince Ferdinand I visited the ruins of Pliska, the first capital of the First Bulgarian Empire. This symbolic stop was intended to bridge the new Third Bulgarian Kingdom with the glory of Bulgaria’s medieval emperors, reinforcing the historical legitimacy of the declaration.
