Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.
October 12, 1912 — The Race to Adrianople
Bulgarian forces advanced rapidly toward Adrianople (Edirne) — the last great Ottoman fortress in Europe — after their victory at Lozengrad. The speed of the Bulgarian advance exceeded even the most optimistic expectations, outpacing the retreating Ottoman army and creating a fluid front across Thrace. Adrianople’s fall would become one of the defining strategic objectives of the First Balkan War for Bulgaria.
October 12, 1991 — Bulgarian Stock Exchange Reopens
The Bulgarian Stock Exchange was re-established in Sofia, reopening a capital market that had been abolished under communist rule. The re-launch was a foundational step in building a market economy and attracting investment to Bulgaria’s privatising industries. The Exchange had originally been founded in 1907 and was one of the oldest in South-Eastern Europe before its forcible closure in 1948.
