October 29, 1877 — Starvation in Pleven
Inside Pleven, Osman Pasha’s garrison was now surviving on severely reduced rations. Horses were being slaughtered for food, and disease was spreading among the weakened troops. Yet discipline held — a testament to Osman Pasha’s command authority and the professionalism of his soldiers. The world watched as one of the great sieges of the 19th century moved toward its inevitable denouement.
October 29, 1912 — First Balkan War Armistice Talks
Following its extraordinary military successes, Bulgaria entered preliminary ceasefire discussions with the Ottoman Empire under great-power mediation. Bulgaria’s negotiating position was exceptionally strong: its army had overrun nearly all of Thrace and stood before Constantinople. The challenge was translating military success into permanent territorial gains before international pressure forced a settlement less favourable than what the battlefield had won.
