Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.

October 28, 1877 — Battle of Telish

Russian forces stormed the Ottoman redoubt at Telish, west of Pleven, capturing it after a fierce engagement. The fall of Telish — following that of Gorni Dubnik four days earlier — eliminated the last significant Ottoman position outside the Pleven perimeter. Osman Pasha’s garrison was now completely and finally encircled, with all hope of relief from outside extinguished. The end at Pleven was now a matter of when, not if.

October 28, 1944 — Bulgaria Signs the Armistice

Bulgaria signed an armistice agreement with the Allied powers in Moscow, formally ending hostilities and fixing the terms under which the country would contribute to the Allied war effort for the remainder of the conflict. The armistice confirmed Soviet predominance over Bulgaria’s political and military affairs, and set the framework for the post-war settlement. October 28, 1944 marked both the end of Bulgaria’s wartime ordeal and the beginning of a new chapter under Soviet-backed communist rule.
