Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.
August 8, 1877 — Honours for the Shipka Volunteers
In the aftermath of the Shipka Pass battle, Russian commander General Radetsky submitted reports commending the Bulgarian Opulchenie — volunteer brigades who had marched through the night to reinforce the defenders at critical moments. Their courage under fire against a numerically superior Ottoman force earned international attention and helped shape the narrative of Bulgarian heroism that would define the memory of the liberation war.
August 8, 1866 — Bulgaria’s First Railway
The Varna–Ruse railway line, Bulgaria’s first, was officially inaugurated, connecting the Black Sea port of Varna with the Danube city of Ruse. Built under Ottoman administration, the line transformed trade and travel across the Bulgarian lands, linking the two major commercial hubs and opening a new era of modern transport infrastructure in the region.
