Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast can offer almost any kind of seaside holiday. There are lively resorts for long evenings, quiet towns for families and historic places where the old streets are as appealing as the beach. The best choice depends on what you want from the trip. Sometimes you need nightlife; sometimes you just need a chair, a sea view and nowhere urgent to be. One practical rule: everything from Sunny Beach southwards is served by Burgas airport, everything north of Nesebar by Varna — that alone can decide the shortlist.

Lozenets grew out of a fishing village and never turned into a package-holiday resort. Accommodation is largely small hotels and private apartments rather than all-inclusive complexes, which keeps the atmosphere closer to a village that happens to have a very good beach.
The beach is long and open, and the town is a convenient base for the southern coast — Sozopol to the north, Tsarevo and the wilder beaches of Strandzha to the south. It is popular with Bulgarian holidaymakers, so August weekends are busier than the rest of the season.

Albena is a purpose-built resort rather than a town — there is no separate village behind the hotels, and the whole site is run as a single complex. That makes it unusually easy with children: the beach is wide and shallow, distances are short and a shuttle runs between the hotel zones.
Behind the resort lies Baltata, a protected riverside forest at the mouth of the Batova river, which is a genuinely different landscape from anything else on the northern coast. Aquamania, the water park, is on site rather than a drive away.

Ravda is the village next door to Sunny Beach, and its whole appeal is being the calm version of it. Prices are lower, the beach is smaller and quieter, and the nightlife is essentially whatever you find on the terrace of your guesthouse.
It has long hosted university and children’s holiday bases, which shaped the low-key character of the place. Nesebar and Sunny Beach are a short bus ride away, so you can dip into the noise and then leave it behind for the night.

Primorsko sits on a small peninsula with a beach on either side — the northern one long and sandy, the southern one more sheltered. The water shelves gently on both, which is the main reason families keep coming back.
The Ropotamo reserve begins just north of the town, and the Thracian sanctuary of Beglik Tash is a short drive inland: a cluster of megaliths in the forest that makes an easy half-day away from the sand. Sozopol is close enough for an evening trip.

Kavarna is a working town rather than a resort, set below the Chirakman plateau on a coast of cliffs and small bays. The beaches are modest compared with the big resorts, but the setting — headlands, rock, open horizon — is the reason to come.
The town spent years building a reputation as Bulgaria’s rock capital through the Kavarna Rock Fest, and traces of it are still visible around the streets. Cape Kaliakra and the Bolata cove are both within easy reach for a day out.

Balchik climbs the white chalk slopes above its bay in terraces, which gives the town its distinctive look from the water. The main attraction is the palace built for Queen Marie of Romania in the years when Southern Dobrudzha was Romanian territory, together with the botanical garden laid out around it and its large cactus collection.
Be realistic about the beaches: they are narrow strips rather than broad sands, and most people who want a full beach day drive to Albena a few minutes away. Balchik is for the promenade, the marina and the gardens.
#4 — Saint Vlas ▶ 3:14

Saint Vlas is wedged between the last slopes of the Balkan range and the sea, and that position gave it its original reputation as a climatic resort, recommended for the mix of mountain and sea air.
Today it is best known for its marina, the largest concentration of yacht berths on this stretch of coast, with restaurants along the quay. It is close enough to walk or take a taxi to Sunny Beach for the evening while sleeping somewhere considerably calmer.
#3 — Sozopol ▶ 3:39

Sozopol was founded by Greek colonists from Miletus as Apollonia Pontica and has been continuously inhabited ever since, which makes it one of the oldest towns in Bulgaria. The Old Town occupies a small peninsula of wooden National Revival houses, sections of ancient fortress wall and narrow lanes that end at the sea.
Two beaches sit either side of the peninsula, with the newer part of town behind them. Boats run out to St. Ivan island, where excavations uncovered a reliquary linked to John the Baptist. In early September the Apollonia arts festival takes over the town.

Golden Sands is a hotel strip built directly against the forest of a nature park, so the resort is green in a way that Sunny Beach is not, and the terrain is steep — the upper hotels are a serious walk from the water.
The beach is wide and the sand genuinely fine. Above the resort, the Aladzha rock monastery is carved into a cliff face and reachable on foot through the woods, which is the best thing to do here on a day off the beach. Varna is twenty minutes by bus.

Sunny Beach is the largest resort in the country, with a beach that runs for several kilometres and a hotel strip to match. It is loud, cheap and relentlessly busy in July and August — which is exactly what most of its visitors are there for.
What saves it is the neighbour: old Nesebar, a UNESCO World Heritage town of medieval churches on a small peninsula, is a walk or a short water-taxi ride from the southern end of the beach. Families tend to stay at that southern end, closer to the water park and further from the clubs.
