Tsarevets Fortress, Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria

Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.

August 3, 1877 — The Ottoman Advance on Shipka

Ottoman forces under Suleiman Pasha, numbering around 27,000 troops, reached the foothills below the Shipka Pass and began deploying for a major assault. The pass was held by a much smaller force of Bulgarian volunteers and Russian soldiers under General Radetsky. The coming battle would test the courage of the defenders to its absolute limit and become one of the most celebrated episodes in Bulgarian national memory.

August 3, 1948 — Treaty of Friendship with the Soviet Union

Bulgaria signed a Treaty of Friendship, Co-operation and Mutual Assistance with the Soviet Union, formalising the country’s position within the Soviet bloc. The treaty placed Bulgaria firmly in Moscow’s orbit and set the framework for four decades of political, military, and economic alignment that would define the communist era.
