Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.
August 2, 1903 — The Ilinden Uprising
On the feast day of Saint Elijah (Ilinden), fighters of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation launched a coordinated uprising against Ottoman rule across Macedonia. Within days, insurgents captured the town of Krushevo and declared a short-lived republic — one of the first such declarations in the Balkans. Though the Ottomans suppressed the rebellion within weeks, the Ilinden Uprising became a defining symbol of Bulgarian and Macedonian resistance, commemorated ever since as a day of national significance.
August 2, 1944 — Bulgaria at a Wartime Crossroads
With Soviet forces sweeping rapidly through Romania, Bulgaria’s wartime government faced a stark choice. Allied diplomatic pressure intensified as it became clear that the country’s alignment with Nazi Germany was untenable. Internal opposition, led by the Fatherland Front coalition, stepped up calls for a change of government and an immediate exit from the war.
