July 10, 1877 — The Battle of Stara Zagora

Bulgarian volunteers and Russian forces fought against Ottoman troops at Stara Zagora, one of the bloodiest engagements of the Russo-Turkish War. Though ultimately a Bulgarian defeat, the battle delayed the Ottoman advance and allowed Russian forces to consolidate their positions further north.

July 10, 1879 — The First Bulgarian Parliament

Bulgaria’s first ordinary National Assembly convened in Tarnovo, establishing the legislative institutions of the newly liberated state and beginning the process of building a functioning parliamentary democracy.
