July 9, 1837 — The Birth of Vasil Levski
Vasil Levski, known as the Apostle of Freedom, was born in Karlovo. He became the most revered figure in Bulgarian history — a revolutionary who devoted and ultimately gave his life to the cause of Bulgarian independence from Ottoman rule. His vision of a free, democratic and equal Bulgaria continues to inspire generations.
July 9, 1866 — Bulgaria’s First Railway
The first railway line on Bulgarian territory opened, running between Varna and Ruse. Built during the Ottoman period, it was the first step toward modernizing transportation across the region.
