March 31, 1893 — Bulgaria’s First Philatelic Society Is Established
On March 31, 1893, Bulgaria’s first philatelic society was established in Plovdiv. Philately may seem like a specialized pastime, but stamps are miniature documents of statehood — every one carries symbols, rulers, anniversaries, and institutions printed on objects that travelled through the mail. In a young Bulgarian state still defining its identity, collecting stamps meant following that identity as it unfolded on paper.
Plovdiv, with its strong urban traditions and cultural life, was a fitting birthplace for such a society. The date shows how civic life fills itself in: alongside schools, theatres, and professional associations, voluntary clubs built around knowledge and collecting also create communities. March 31 marks a charming but real corner of Bulgaria’s cultural history.
March 31, 1981 — The National Palace of Culture Is Inaugurated
On March 31, 1981, the National Palace of Culture — universally known as NDK — was inaugurated in Sofia. Built for the celebrations of the 1,300th anniversary of the Bulgarian state, the enormous complex was designed to host congresses, concerts, exhibitions, and public events on a scale few other Bulgarian buildings could match. Its architecture and surrounding urban area reshaped central Sofia’s modern face.
NDK was a product of its political moment — a late socialist prestige project — but it became something more durable than that: a familiar gathering point and cultural venue for generations of Sofians. Forty-plus years on, it remains part of the daily fabric of the city. March 31 marks the opening of a building that has genuinely become a place, not just a monument.
