May 13, 1879 — The Postal Service and Bulgaria’s First Stamps
On May 13, 1879, Bulgaria’s postal service was established, and the first Bulgarian stamps, printed in Saint Petersburg, entered circulation. This took place during the first year of the Principality’s institutional life.
The new state urgently needed systems of communication and public administration. The postal service created a practical connection between institutions, towns and citizens, while the stamps were more than instruments used for payment. They became small signs of state authority and identity, showing how the new Principality was building its own administrative system.
May 13, 1888 — Sofia Zoo Is Founded
On May 13, 1888, Sofia Zoo was founded. It is the oldest and largest zoo in the Balkans. Its creation formed part of the transformation of Sofia after the city became Bulgaria’s capital.
The young capital quickly developed new institutions, parks, public buildings and scientific collections. The zoo combined education, leisure and civic prestige in the European model of urban modernization. It became not only a place for animals, but also part of Sofia’s image as a growing capital.
