On May 22, 1954, Bulgaria and Greece restored their diplomatic relations at legation level. Contacts between the two neighbouring states had been interrupted several times during the turbulent decades of the Balkan Wars and the two world wars.
The restoration took place in a divided Cold War environment. Bulgaria belonged to the socialist bloc, while Greece was aligned with the West.
