September 6, 1885 — Unification of Bulgaria
In a historic and bloodless military coup, the autonomous province of Eastern Rumelia declared its unification with the Principality of Bulgaria. Led by the Bulgarian Secret Central Revolutionary Committee and backed by Prince Alexander I of Battenberg, this act united a divided nation in defiance of the Treaty of Berlin, becoming one of Bulgaria’s greatest national achievements.
September 6, 1997 — European Convention on Human Rights Takes Effect
Bulgaria’s ratification of the European Convention on Human Rights officially entered into force. This landmark step aligned Bulgarian legislation with European legal standards and allowed Bulgarian citizens to seek justice at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, cementing the country’s democratic path.
