September 5, 1885 — Riots in Goliamo Konare Spark Unification
Under the leadership of Prodan Tishkov (known as Chardafon), armed volunteers in the Eastern Rumelian town of Goliamo Konare rebelled and arrested the local governor. This action served as the official catalyst for the Unification movement, prompting other towns to rise up and military units to march towards Plovdiv.
September 5, 1944 — Soviet Union Declares War on Bulgaria
Despite Bulgaria’s declaration of neutrality and attempts to negotiate an armistice, the Soviet Union officially declared war on the Kingdom of Bulgaria. This declaration cleared the way for the Red Army to enter Bulgarian territory, leading to the collapse of the monarchy and the eventual establishment of the communist regime.
