July 20, 792 — An Early Bulgarian Victory

Khan Kardam defeated the Byzantine army at the frontier stronghold of Marcellae, near today’s Karnobat, in one of the earliest recorded Bulgarian military triumphs. The Orthodox Church also marks July 20 as the feast day of the Prophet Elijah, celebrated in Bulgaria as Iliaden.

July 20, 1878 — The Bulgarian Armed Forces Are Established

By order of Prince Alexander Dondukov-Korsakov, head of the Russian administration in liberated Bulgaria, the country’s armed forces were formally set up, laying the institutional foundation for national defense.

July 20, 1963 — Connecting Bulgaria by Rail

Bulgaria’s second electric railway line, linking Gorna Oryahovitsa and Ruse, went into operation, improving transport links across the north of the country.
