July 5, 1877 — The Battle of Shipka Pass Begins
Bulgarian volunteers and Russian troops began the defence of Shipka Pass against Ottoman forces, one of the most iconic battles of the Russo-Turkish War. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the defenders held the pass through weeks of fierce fighting, a feat celebrated in Bulgarian national memory to this day.
July 5, 1879 — Diplomatic Relations with Greece
Bulgaria established diplomatic relations with Greece, another step in building the young state’s network of bilateral ties across Europe and the Balkans.
