July 8, 1881 — Bulgaria’s First National Census
Bulgaria conducted its first national population census after liberation, recording approximately 2 million inhabitants and providing the young state with essential data for governance, planning, and the development of national institutions.
July 8, 1888 — Sofia University Founded
Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski was established, becoming Bulgaria’s first and oldest higher education institution. Named after the medieval scholar and disciple of Saints Cyril and Methodius, it remains the country’s flagship university to this day.
