Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.
October 27, 1877 — Final Preparations at Pleven
Osman Pasha finalised plans for a mass breakout from Pleven. The attempt, he knew, was a gamble with the lives of his entire army — but starvation was no longer a distant prospect, and honour demanded that he try. Bulgarian and Russian units on the siege perimeter received intelligence of an impending breakout and braced for the assault that would come on December 10 — still weeks away, but already casting its shadow over both sides of the lines.
October 27, 1991 — First Post-Communist Parliamentary Elections
Bulgaria held its first fully democratic multi-party parliamentary elections since the communist era. The vote resulted in a narrow victory for the Union of Democratic Forces over the reformed communist Bulgarian Socialist Party. The elections marked a genuine transition toward multi-party democracy and set the framework for Bulgaria’s first non-communist government since 1946.
