Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.

October 8, 1877 — The Press Watches Pleven

British war correspondent Archibald Forbes filed dispatches from the Bulgarian front describing the methodical encirclement of Pleven — reports that reached breakfast tables across Europe and North America. The Russo-Turkish War was one of the first conflicts covered in real time by a modern international press corps, and events in Bulgaria shaped public opinion abroad in ways that would influence the eventual political settlement.

October 8, 1912 — The First Balkan War Begins

Montenegro declared war on the Ottoman Empire, triggering the First Balkan War. Bulgaria, Serbia, and Greece followed within days. After decades of revolutionary struggle and diplomatic preparation, the Balkan League launched a coordinated military campaign that would drive the Ottoman Empire from nearly all of its remaining European territory within weeks. For Bulgaria, the war represented the long-awaited chance to unite all Bulgarian-populated lands.
