September 16, 1875 — Stara Zagora Uprising

An armed uprising organized by the Bulgarian Revolutionary Central Committee broke out in Stara Zagora against Ottoman rule. Although poorly coordinated and quickly suppressed by the Ottoman authorities, the Stara Zagora Uprising served as an important precursor and tactical lesson for the historic April Uprising of 1876.

September 16, 1975 — National Palace of Culture (NDK) Proposed

Plans for the construction of a major cultural and congress center in Sofia (now known as the National Palace of Culture, or NDK) were officially presented. Built to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of the founding of the Bulgarian state, NDK would become the largest multifunctional congress center in Southeast Europe and an architectural landmark of Sofia.
