September 17, 1912 — General Mobilization for the First Balkan War
Tsar Ferdinand I ordered a general mobilization of the Bulgarian armed forces in preparation for war against the Ottoman Empire. The mobilization was met with massive public enthusiasm, and within days, the Bulgarian army swelled to over 600,000 men, forming the main striking force of the Balkan League (Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, Montenegro).
September 17, 1996 — BNB Raises Interest Rates to Combat Hyperinflation
The Bulgarian National Bank raised the basic interest rate to a historic high of 300% in a desperate attempt to stabilize the Bulgarian Lev and combat galloping inflation. The country was in the midst of a severe banking and economic crisis, which eventually led to the introduction of the Currency Board system in 1997.
