Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.
August 1, 1877 — Radetsky Takes Command at Shipka
As Ottoman pressure mounted in the Balkan Mountains, Russian General Fyodor Radetsky assumed command of the combined Bulgarian volunteer and Russian forces defending the Shipka Pass. Radetsky’s organisational skill and the fierce determination of the Bulgarian Opulchenie volunteers would prove decisive in the battles that followed — battles that became central to the Bulgarian story of national liberation.
August 1, 1990 — The Grand National Assembly Convenes
Bulgaria’s first freely elected Grand National Assembly met for its opening session in Sofia. Tasked with drafting a new democratic constitution, the assembly represented a landmark in the country’s post-communist transition — the product of the first genuinely competitive elections held in Bulgaria in over four decades.
