At the Battle of Rusocastron Fortress, near today’s Burgas Region, Tsar Ivan Alexander defeated Emperor Andronikos III Palaiologos. It stands as the last Bulgarian military victory over the Byzantine Empire before both states eventually fell under Ottoman rule.
July 18, 2012 — Remembering the Burgas Airport Attack
On this day, a bombing at Sarafovo Airport near Burgas killed five Israeli tourists and the Bulgarian bus driver, and injured dozens more. The attack remains one of the deadliest terrorist incidents on Bulgarian soil in recent history, prompting a major international investigation.
