July 25, 1878 — Bulgaria’s First Nationwide Newspaper
The first copy of Maritsa rolled off the press in Plovdiv, becoming the first Bulgarian nationwide newspaper published after the country’s liberation from Ottoman rule. It would run for seven years before its final issue in 1885.
July 25, 1879 — Opening Ties with Italy
Bulgaria established diplomatic relations with Italy, another step in the young state’s integration into the network of European nations.
